Finishing the Website
Hi Ladies,
The website looks great, but we are not finished. Myself included. I just wanted to post and say, please be patient. I am working on my new original resource today and will finish my last page (Important People) when I finish that. Let's make sure we are all finished before we post our URL to D2L. It is due tonight at midnight, so we have plenty of time.

NEW Website URL!
Before I figured out how to arrange the webpages, I had to delete our old website because I thought adding them in a different order would correct the problem. I will comment with the new link! It is slightly different. I figured out how to re-arrange our pages in order! Should be all set! I have almost completed the homepage, it just needs our final concept map added! Emily I need you to if possible finalize our concept map and turn in it via our blog by the 21st so we can all get the 40 pts! Then it needs to be added to the home page on our website, just the image of it! I provided a spot for it already! Just follow the storyboard to a T while creating the website and we should be in the clear! Good luck and remember to add your lessons where we plugged them in on the storyboard. It may not be on the two pages you were assigned too, but you have the links and information and are responsible for getting them on website! Plug them in correctly and explain them since you know what they are about and the person responsible for that page (which we assigned in our storyboard) needs to arrange the information so if flows on the page! Good luck, we got this!

Final Concept Map
Do we want to just take our old concept map and maybe make it more detailed now that we have spelled out our entire project in our story board? Maybe just add a couple specific landmarks and people we used and post it as our final. Megan and I are doing our two webpages tomorrow so we can wrap the website up soon. Lesson Plans!
What are your lesson plans about?? We can't have the same, so let me know what you are doing.
I was thinking about doing a local history intro lesson, it would have kids "quiz" themselves, classmates, family, etc. about what they know. When was Kalamazoo founded, who started the town, local facts, stuff like that. That would be their data collection and then they would create graphs to show what they already know about the local history before really starting the unit.

STORYBOARD
I made a Google doc which you should all know about by now! Emily, I made the changes you suggested and then added a new page. Go ahead and look, make changes, and add what you both would like to have under the two pages you will contribute to. As of now it looks like Megan will have HISTORICAL LANDMARKS OF KALAMAZOO and WRAP UP. Remember in ONE of your pages, you will need to add an original source and for BOTH of your pages you will need new information with web sites. Lets get this done and turned in! :]

PODCAST SCRIPT
Courtney:
Good afternoon parents and other listeners in the Kalamazoo area. Our second grade class has been working on learning more about the topic of “local history” this year. We first started the year out by learning the basics about what a community is. Our students learned about industry, government, local attractions, and people that all make up the community of Kalamazoo. If you recall, the students spent a day a few weeks back volunteering for a local animal shelter in order to have a deeper understanding of what it means to be involved in their community. We also put on a school store earlier in the marking period in order for them to learn about goods and services. Students sold, and bought desired items for tokens in which they could save to buy a larger item at the end of the unit. Lastly, to wrap up our unit on community, we researched local attractions in Kalamazoo by having the students learn to use iPads at the media center. Students used what is called a “hot list” which is a list of resources reviewed by the teacher. This allows for students to get accurate information, while still enabling them to practice and learn how to research on their own. These included places such as Western Michigan University, Wings Stadium, the Air Zoo, and Sweet Water Donuts. As a treat to end the unit, the students got to enjoy some donuts from Sweet Waters.

The next unit we discussed within the topic of local history was the actual local history of Kalamazoo. Here students learned about local industry, founding government, and important individuals. One of the recent activities students have been involved in was a tour of the downtown area. Here they were able to listen to guest speakers or “experts” talk about the specific historical attractions in the downtown area. These included the State Theatre, The Radisson Hotel, Kalamazoo Valley Museum and the Public Library. We as educators contacted these experts before hand to ensure our students got credible information about our local history. Another activity that we plan to do within the next week is a timeline. Here our students will use pictures they captured on our tour of downtown last week, along with research on additional historical places and people to create a classroom timeline. Each student will be responsible for either a historical landmark or person of Kalamazoo. They will be expected to present their findings to the class after they have done their research and created a power point slide. We as teachers, will also take these slides and make them into one power point for you as parents and the local community to see at our final showing at the end of the marking period.

After students have picked either a historical landmark or person from Kalamazoo, and done the majority of their research, they will begin the end of process of our project. Here students will create large posters that will contain all the information and photo’s they would like to share with parents and the community. Outside of class, students will be responsible for making their character come to life, or building a replica of their landmark. These will be used at our community gathering where the students will be set up in the gymnasium and presenting their findings to anyone who would like to hear about Kalamazoo’s local history. At this point in the marking period, students will be experts on their landmark or person and be able to share this with others. As a class we will have also made a small replica of Kalamazoo's community. This will be in the middle of the gymnasium at our final gathering for everyone to view. After this marking period, our students will have not only learned about new technology, but also how to work individually, as a team, and also how to collect information from outside sources as well as the internet to learn on their own. By implementing project based learning, students will have gotten the chance to take the information from lessons and mini projects they have completed, and be able to transition this information from the classroom to real life situations. Our goal is that they will use this knowledge in the future and continue to play an active role in the Kalamazoo community, and also have a sense of their surroundings. Keep in mind, multiple lessons and mini projects have not been mentioned, but these are a couple of the bigger ones that lead will to our final gathering. Our class will be talking to 4th grade students in San Francisco. The following link contains a document that describes how our class will use the information they give us to learn about communities and local history.

Clarifications
Hi Ladies,
I just need to clarify two things so that we are all on the same page. I don't think we have been communicating extremely well, so this should make things easier.
- Our age group focusing on the second grade. Second grade is the only grade that focuses on community and local history as far as GLCE's are concerned. I know that Courtney had mentioned fourth grade, but unless you can find some that I did not, the fourth grade GLCE's don't cover what we need to cover.
-I don't check the blog everyday, but at least every other day. I think we all need to commit to at least that, because last week was a little crazy waiting until the night of.

Virtual Penpals, Google Maps, & Digital Story.
Hey ladies.
We have a lot of work this week. If anyone is familiar with Google documents and would like to start our description of a project with Epals speak up :]. Also, after we complete that, we must make some sort of map to go along with our topic. If you have any ideas for either please comment so we can get started! The last thing we have is a digital story. I am a little confused as to what lesson plans we use for this, the ones we made maybe? Anyways, lets get the ball rolling so we can finish all this by Sunday! Thanks

Concept Map/Reading Reflections
Okay, I commented on Megan's posting about an idea for our big project. Let me know what you think and I can do our draft of the concept map that is due this Sunday. Also, are we all suppose to do reading reflections or is it a group thing as well. The instructions confused me when it said "respond to two other groups' postings". Makes it sound like each group does one posting, but my guess is that it is individual.

I think I have an idea!!
Hello girls,
This is my first time ever using a blog, so please bare with me!!! I have been thinking of several ideas for our overall project for local history. This is an idea I am still trying to work through but, I was thinking we could do some sort of scavenger hunt of some very important land marks in kalamazoo or the western part of the state and we could have them research or do something fun an informational with them. This may be a terrible idea but just a thought! Let me know what you think!?

Projects Coming Up
Girls, we need to think of a big project that has to do with our topic local history that students could do in a classroom. We will eventually be making a website on this topic that will have our podcast, lesson plans and information on it. This project or topic will be the main topic of our concept map we have to make soon. Any suggestions?
