I posted an idea yesterday but I used my iPhone app and I guess it didn't work!
I think a scavenger hunt is a great idea and it would be fun, but it will also be a lot of work and I'm not sure how informational it would be over an entire semester.
What about role playing? Students could be an important family, industry, or building in Kalamazoo. They would have to research, find pictures/sources, and then great a role play or short skit to tell the class about what they learned.
This is assuming we are doing Kalamazoo, but we also might want to nail down a certain time period too.
Or what about tying local history to learning about communities?? Community is a big part of lower elementary curriculum. Students could learn about the local history and connect aspects of history/people/places to community features (government, police, industry, etc.)
